How to rent an instrument at JAMS Music

We work closely with schools in the San Ramon Valley, Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, Castro Valley, Antioch, San Leandro, Mountain House, Danville, Alamo, and New Haven School Districts. All of our instruments are band teacher approved and are perfect choices for students in elementary, middle, and high school.

You can begin your rental online using our digital form or visit JAMS Music in person to complete the process. Both options provide access to the same inventory and rental terms.

JAMS is pleased to offer all of the following instruments for rent:

Step 1 — Begin the Form

Click the rental link to open a new window displaying the JAMS Music logo. Enter the first and last name of the person who will be playing the instrument.

Step 2 — School Information

Select your school district and school, if applicable. If the student is not in school or your school is not listed, choose Other.

Step 3 — Continue Through the Form

Provide the requested information and click Next to move through each section until the form is complete.

You are agreeing to be charged automatically on the same day each month for your instrument rental. If your original rental date is after the 28th of the month, your account shall be charged on the 28th. You are responcible for keeping your payment type current. If the payment is unable to be processed, we will automatically attempt to charge your account three more times. You will also be notified if your payment isn’t going through. You can update your payment information at any time through logging into to your rental account, or by calling us or stopping into the store.

Step 4 - Pick Up Your Instrument

JAMS Music Team Members will process your rental and mark it ready to be picked up at your convenience. We will also show you the necessary accessories you’ll need to purchase in order to have a successful playing experience.

No Hassle Damage Coverage

We expect a normal amount of wear and tear on our instruments during your rental period. Normal wear and tear includes small scratches, very small dents, routine adjustments to screws, pads, and water keys, and typical marks on the case.

However, damage beyond normal wear and tear—such as dents, cracks, bent keys, dirty or clogged piping, stuck valves, or any issue that prevents the instrument from functioning properly—must be paid for by the Renter.

If you select our No‑Hassle Damage Coverage, we will cover the labor for repairs or, if necessary, swap or replace the instrument. There are two exceptions:

  1. Lost or Stolen Instruments

    We must receive the instrument back, even if it’s in multiple pieces. All instruments must be returned with their mouthpieces, tenon caps, and any other parts specific to the instrument. (Lubricants are not required.)

  2. Malicious or Intentional Damage

    Intentional damage is not covered. For example, if someone scratches or engraves their name into the bell of a trumpet with a sharp object, the Renter will be responsible for the cost of replacement.

Rental Options

Rent‑to‑Rent (R2R)

Our standard rental options are for quality, name brand instruments, approved by our local schools.

  • Monthly rental fee + sales tax

  • Optional No‑Hassle Damage Coverage $6 /per month

  • No minimum rental term

  • Return anytime

  • Payments do not go toward ownership of the rental instrument

Purchase Incentives

We highly recommend purchasing a new instrument as soon as you know you or your child are committed to and interested in learning to play. If you choose to purchase instrument in the same family, we offer:

  • 10% off a new instrument after 4 months of continuous rental

  • 20% off a new instrument after 10 months of continuous rental

These incentives apply to the purchase of a new instrument, not the rental unit.

Rent‑to‑Own (R2O)

  • Available only on new instruments

  • Very limited availability

  • Payments apply toward the manufacturer’s list price

  • Discounts for early payoff

You can rent an instrument any time we are open. Please note it will take about 10-20 minutes to complete the rental process. Times may be longer during the Back-to-School rental season.

Bring a valid ID

To rent with us, we require a valid ID with a current address. The drivers licence used for the rental online must be present at the time of instrument pickup. If a spouse or family member is being sent to pick up the instrument, their drivers licence or a some form of utility bill that shows the same address on the rental account.

Choose all necessary accessories

Depending on the instrument, you may need to purchase additional accessories such as: cleaning kits, reeds, straps, shoulder rests, rosin, and lyres. We have these available in-store.

The JAMS Rental Advantage

  • High quality brand-name instruments with affordable monthly rates with no minimum rental period requirement

    • With our month-to-month rental program, there is no minimum rental period. You can return the instrument at anytime with no penalties. Rentals are not prorated or refundable.

  • Both Rent-to-Rent and Rent-to-Own programs available

  • We offer a “No Hassle Damage Coverage” for only $6 additional per month. This covers accidental damage to your instrument (drops, hits, cracks, dents, or even the instrument being run over by a car). It does not include damages that may occur through misuse or neglect of an instrument (e.g. throwing the instrument, carving your name into it, or hitting your sibling with it, intentionally neglecting the care of it, etc.).

  • We have incentives at the four (4) and ten (10) month mark for purchase of another instrument in the same family of instruments. At four months, we will apply a 10% discount off of a new instrument, and at ten months, we apply a 20% discount off a new instrument.
